Henry Lyman Sayen
Henry Lyman Sayen, an Early American Modernist painter, was born in Philadelphia in 1875.
Sayen studied with Henri Matisse in Paris, and was one of the first American artists to join the Fauvism movement.
His paintings incorporated “cubist compositions” and those from other modernist art movements.
He worked as an electrical engineer and invented a variety of devices for which he held patents. He designed precision instruments and electrical circuitry, and in 1897 patented a self-regulating X-ray tube.
